How to make a smooth transition from employee to full-time entrepreneur? Many of us feel so anxious with our 8-5 job. We think that we are ready to quit our job so that we would have more time to focus on our business.

The reason why we have been employed for a few or more years is because of job security, a steady income, some benefits, and a bright future ahead of us.

But still, we want more from our lives, and starting your own business may be the way to get there.

However, moving from employment to entrepreneurship requires a lot of planning, a clear vision of your goal, and confidence that you can make it as an independent business owner.

Before you make such a decision, I’d like to share a few things to make the transition go smoothly for you. Transitioning from an employee to an entrepreneur is not easy, but it is life-changing.

1. Build a savings fund.

When it comes to taking such a leap as quitting your job, the rule of thumb is to save about 6 months of living expenses. As an entrepreneur, there are times when business is characterized by a hunger and feast cycle. Having something in reserve can carry you through the not-so-good months and make it much easier and less stressful for you.

2. Think like a boss

As an employee, you do not have to think much when it comes to running the business. You have a manager or supervisor calling the shots, and you do not have to second-guess any of the decisions or things they tell you to do. But when you become a small business owner or a full-time entrepreneur, it’s up to you to set a goal, make the plans and do the necessary work, which includes telling NO if you feel a suggestion or advice might keep you from achieving your goals.

3. Work more and longer hours.

One of the reasons you want to quit your job is because you want more freedom. As an employee, you know you have a work schedule and at the same time you enjoy all the benefits of being an employee, but once you have your own business, you do not have that luxury as often because you are building a business and you have to adjust to working longer hours.

4. Expect to do it yourself.

When you start your own business, you can no longer rely on other people. It will be you. You will be the manager, the accountant, the HR department, the social media manager, or even the customer service department. As an aspiring business owner, the first few months of your business will be challenging, and if you do not initially have the funds to hire someone to do the work for you, you’ll have to do a lot of things yourself, and sometimes that’s something you do not like to do.

5. Plan each day.

Plan your day wisely when you are working on your business. Time is usually a scarce commodity, especially for entrepreneurs. It seems that you always have less hours in a day than you think. There are never enough hours in a day to get all the work done. To make the most of your time, create a weekly schedule that you can stick to, while also setting aside some time for other things. Do not just focus on the daily activities, but also make sure you focus on your long-term business strategy to reach profitability faster.
